LIFE VinoShield
Improve the European wine sector's adaptation to climate change thanks to innovative protective nets
Project key figures
The European Union is the first producer, consumer, and exporter of wines, with 3/4 of winegrowing areas located in Spain, France, and Italy. The vineyards in these countries face drastic increases in the frequency and intensity of spring frosts, hail, excessive sun exposure, and intense or heavy rainfalls due to climate change.
Confronted with these climatic hazards which affect the yield and the vine and wine quality, winegrowers are looking for effective methods to protect the crops.
Against this backdrop, the LIFE VinoShield project is designed to provide answers to these challenges, based on the following figures.

52 months
project duration from September 2024

4.1 million euros
for project budget

7 partners
involved in the project

9 vineyards
with test installations in 3 countries (France, Italy and Spain)

What is the European LIFE program?
The LIFE Program is the EU Program for Environment and Climate Action. The VINOSHIELD project is part of the “Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation” sub-program within the LIFE Program, contributing to the European Green Deal’s objectives.
This initiative aims to transform the EU into a fair and prosperous society with a competitive, resource-efficient economy, aiming for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. It also focuses on protecting the EU’s natural capital and enhancing citizens’ health and well-being by mitigating environmental and climate-related risks.

The LIFE Programme supports these goals through its four sub-programmes, particularly in:
- Environment
- Nature and Biodiversity
- Circular Economy and Quality of Life
- Climate action
- Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation
- Clean Energy Transition.
The “Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation” sub-program specifically targets the development and promotion of innovative solutions to meet EU climate goals. It supports the implementation of EU climate policies by enhancing governance, encouraging public-private collaboration, and catalyzing the large-scale deployment of successful solutions.
This sub-program plays a key role in the EU’s transformation towards a climate-neutral and resilient society.
