From data to the field: partners review early progress in Peyrole
Peyrole, France | 22 July 2025
The LIFE VINOSHIELD consortium recently reached a significant milestone in its mission to climate-proof European viticulture. Partners from across the project gathered at V’innopôle Sud-Ouest for the annual Steering Committee meeting, hosted by the Institut Français de la Vigne et du Vin (IFV).
This meeting was a crucial opportunity to transition from installation to evaluation, as the team analyzed the first wave of data from the current growing season.

Evaluating the first line of defense
The heart of the discussions centered on the preliminary outcomes of the field trials. This season, innovative protective nets have been deployed across various experimental sites to combat the “big four” climate threats: hail, frost, excessive sunlight, and heavy rainfall.
The technical sessions allowed partners to:
- Share initial trial data and technical evaluations.
- Assess the durability and performance of the fixation systems.
Discuss the impact of the nets on the micro-climate of the vines.

A deep dive into fungal disease protection
A highlight of the gathering was the technical visit to IFV’s experimental vineyard. Partners got a first-hand look at the practical deployment of specialized nets designed to mitigate fungal diseases. By reducing moisture levels and providing a physical barrier, these nets aim to decrease the reliance on chemical treatments – a core objective of the project’s sustainability roadmap.
Seeing the technology in action at V’innopôle provided invaluable insights into the ergonomics of the handling systems, ensuring they meet the real-world needs of busy winegrowers.

Science, collaboration and a taste of terroir
While the focus was strictly on climate resilience and technical performance, the meeting also celebrated the culture the project aims to protect. The event concluded with a curated wine tasting at the Maison du Vin de Gaillac.
After all, the ultimate goal of LIFE VINOSHIELD is to ensure that even in a changing climate, European vineyards can continue to produce the exceptional wines that define their regions.
Reviewing the first field data together is where the project truly comes to life. It’s no longer just a concept; it’s a tangible solution that we are refining for growers across Europe.
