LIFE VINOSHIELD Project Officially Launched to Protect European Vineyards

The innovative LIFE VINOSHIELD project, aimed at safeguarding European vineyards from the adverse impacts of climate change, has been officially launched and will commence in September 2024. With a budget of €4.1 million, co-funded by the European Union, this ambitious project will run until December 2028.

The LIFE VINOSHIELD initiative introduces multifunctional textile protective nets designed to shield vineyards from climatic hazards such as spring frosts, hail, excessive sun exposure, and heavy rainfall. The project will conduct extensive trials across nine vineyards in France, Italy, and Spain to demonstrate the effectiveness of these nets in enhancing vine yield and quality.

By 2032, the project aims to protect 16,500 hectares of vineyards and reduce crop damage from 30% to just 5%. Additionally, the initiative is expected to equip 2,750 winegrowers with these innovative solutions while promoting sustainability through the recycling of nets at the end of their lifecycle.
