First Installations of Innovative Protective Nets in European Vineyards

The LIFE VinoShield project has reached a significant milestone with the installation of innovative nets across vineyards in France, Spain, and Italy. These installations aim to shield vines from climate-induced hazards such as frost, hail, excessive sun, and intense rainfall.

Between mid-February and mid-March 2025, these protective nets were deployed in representative vineyards, including:

  • France: Château La Varière (49), Château Dillon (33), Domaine de Cassaigne (32), Château de l’Éclair (69)
  • Italy: Molinelli Vini – Ziano Piacentino
  • Spain: La Escribana – La Rioja

Two types of nets are under evaluation: one specialized for frost and hail protection, and a multifunctional version that also guards against diseases, sun exposure, and heavy rainfall. Each site follows a rigorous experimental setup, incorporating meteorological stations and sensors to monitor the nets’ effectiveness.
